With a history dating back to the pre-war years, in 1984 Furzeham Villa changed it’s name to Brixham Town FC. The club sadly folded in 2015 but was was reformed in 2020 with a new badge and new club colours and, following much work, established a new home at John Charles Park on North Boundary Road.
As club chairman Sean Langdon explains “We have worked so hard over the past year fighting planning conditions to transform our facility into an amazing place for the whole community. We have been through and had to pay for ecology reports, bat surveys, tree surveys, highway plans, acoustic reports and archelogy reports all just to turn a run down agricultural field into a safe space for kids in our community to play sport. We have started 2 adult teams, a walking football team, several youth teams, girls football teams and we aren’t done there. We have worked with Thrive to support those seeking asylum in Torbay and ASRUS at Higher Brixham. We really are touching every aspect of our community and we now need your help to allow us to go further with the work we are doing.
“As we currently have no changing facilities at John Charles Park, we have to use Furzeham Green on Saturdays at a cost of over £50 per week. We turned up 3 times this season the council had not opened the changing room doors meaning our goal nets are locked inside and the response we got is that no one on the council works weekends and there is nothing they can do. One weekend, they hadn’t even cleaned the changing rooms from the previous use. Not only that but the state of the council pitches locally is deplorable with large holes in the goalmouth areas.
“We have a fantastic pitch available at North Boundary Road which we are paying for but currently can’t use for matches due to the lack of changing facilities. We have approached the adjacent cricket club to hire their changing rooms however this is not something the cricket club wanted to do so we have had to make plans to put our own on site.
“This is a hefty, unplanned expense and we have set up a Crowdfunder page to help move this project forward. Anything anyone can give to make our goal of playing back home next season a reality would mean the world to everyone associated with Brixham Town FC. If we manage to achieve this goal there is no end to what this club can achieve in the next 5 years. Please if you can afford anything to help us out it really does go a massive way!”
