A recent collaboration between students, businesses and a local charity for the benefit of the hospital has once again shown that Brixham is working well together. The corner of Bolton Street, where the Threshers building has been demolished is an eye-sore as people arrive in Brixham, so one of the Brixham Chamber members, Mark Choppin from the West Country Deli, had a brainwave.
As Mark explained, “I knew that Brixham College had a GSCE photography course and contacted the school to see if they could provide local images of our beautiful town which could be put on the hoardings. As luck would have it, the students had had a special ‘community’ assignment to produce a Brixham Calendar for 2015, with the proceeds going to the League of Friends at Brixham hospital.” So Mark suggested printing the images on boards, funded by Brixham Chamber, to help brighten up the corner for the summer period.
The students were divided into pairs and each pair was responsible for a particular month. Yvonne Miller, who produced the May image said, “It has been really interesting to find out more about Brixham community doing this project.” Elena Riley, responsible for December’s photo also said, “It is nice that our pictures have been used and we get to show the community what we have been doing.”
Annie Lang from the League of Friends said “It has been a fantastic combined effort involving the school, hospital and the Brixham Chamber members in pulling everyone together for the good of the town – and great fun too. The students have worked so hard on the project and all the monies raised will go towards new equipment for the hospital. The Calendars are now available in local stores including Brixham Does Care, so we really hope the sales go well.”
