Brixham Chamber have welcomed newcomers, Lucy and Alex Foley to the area. They had been looking for a business, where they could start a new life living and working together in a beautiful part of the country and recently bought the Guardhouse Café at Berry Head.

Their backgrounds brought some useful skills to running a café – Lucy worked as a walking holiday guide, around Italian hillsides and Alex started out as a chemical engineer helping factories, chemical plants, warehouses and hospitals, to solve problems and become less wasteful. Between them, they felt they had a good foundation for the food, financial and customer service elements of running a café.

They are delighted with their decision to move to Brixham as Alex said: “Our customers, staff, neighbours and the business community in town have made us extremely welcome. Every day we still marvel at the beauty of Berry Head. The effort that individuals and groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Friends of Berry Head put into promoting the town is inspiring and hopefully we can play our part in the years to come!”

Thankfully they inherited a strong team the Cafe who have helped them through the transition including Diane Lunn, who said; “ It is a fantastic place to work. They have made such a big difference, so welcoming to everyone – always with a smile – and they work really hard, determined to make it a great success”.

Lucy said; “We have not changed a great deal about the café as the feedback from customers was very positive but the main big difference is that we are now open much more. We expanded our team this summer, to enable us to open 7 days per week all year round – unless the weather is REALLY bad! We are now offering evening events including Paella, Mexican, Greek and Thai nights which have proved really popular – see www.guardhousecafe.com/events. So any time you are up on Berry Head for a walk, there should be a cup of tea, ice cream or glass of wine – and even more importantly, a friendly welcome – available for you.“
