Brixham AngelsBrixham Angels Contact: Barry Flack
The Angel represents the selfless actions of the women of Brixham during the ‘Great Gale’ of January 1866. Even more lives would have been lost had it not been for the ‘Brixham Angels’ who guided their loved ones home to port and pulled seamen from the wrecks of vessels washed ashore in the bay. Our range of Brixham Angels are all Hand Crafted in Brixham and are given as a Talisman or gesture of affection, they have travelled to distant parts taking with them the spirit of the ‘Wives of Brixham’. Brixham Angels are proud to support The Fishermen’s Mission.

Harbour Lights Holiday ApartmentsHarbour Lights Holiday Apartments Contact: Robert Godley
Harbour Lights holiday apartments is a 3 storey Victorian house alongside Brixham Marina and lifeboat station right on the Southwest Coastal Path providing easy access to the harbour, beaches and the Country Park.
We have two modern and well equipped two-bedroom apartments which each sleeps up to four, with fantastic views across the marina, Torbay and beyond. Studio 3 apartment is a cosy hideaway for two which overlooks the rear gardens and is decorated and fitted out with everything you need for an enjoyable break including TV with freeview and DVD player.
A few minutes walk along the coastal path in either direction will provide a contrasting and appealing choice between the hustle and bustle of a lively fishing port with its shops and restaurants or the tranquility of the Berry Head nature reserve and old fort. Here, the eagle-eyed observer might be lucky enough to spot dolphins or seals in their natural environment around the dramatic coastline.
For those inclined to stay closer to home, Breakwater beach is just a few metres away with its fabulous Breakwater Bistro offering sea views from its restaurant and cafe terrace. Rock pooling is a national pastime and there’s definitely no shortage of coves and inlets in which to discover a myriad hiding places for the denizens of the deep!
Berry Head Hotel further up the road offers a luxurious cliff-top terrace bistro for those wanting to celebrate a special occasion or just enjoy a bit of luxury whilst gazing out across the sea, watching the trawlers return surrounded by hoards of hungry gulls!
Car parking is in the Marina car park close by and guests will be provided with a free permit for the duration of their stay. WiFi is included in apartments one and two.

Lopes Holiday HomeLopes Holiday Home Contact: Chris Bryson
Lopes – 15 Overgang, Brixham – is a spacious quayside house overlooking the fishing harbour, marina, fish market, and with commanding views across Torbay and Lyme Bay. Lopes was once a pub; in 1860 it was known as ‘The Lopes Arms’. Since then it has gone through several transformations, but is still at the heart of the fishing town, always bustling with activity during the Easter and Summer months, and is only minutes walk from the many bars, restaurants, shops and the coastal path.
Unusually for a quayside property Lopes has private off-road parking for two cars only a few minutes walk away.
With three bedrooms, two bathrooms a utility room and a small courtyard ideal for drying off swimwear after a day on the beach, Lopes is ideal for families wishing to explore Brixham and the surrounding area. In one of the bedrooms the two single beds can be fixed together and be made up as a double if required. The living area is on the third floor to take best advantage of the panoramic views. From here you can observe every sailboat, power boat and fishing boat that enters and leaves Brixham harbour.

Brixham Art SocietyBrixham Art Society Contact: Julia Lee
Brixham Art Society
Brixham Art Society has a long tradition of encouraging local art lovers to immerse themselves in the engrossing activity of painting, and to share ideas expressed in a variety of media. We all gain confidence from watching others at work, and trying out new subject matter. We discuss, suggest and encourage each other on how to improve our skills. Members also have the opportunity to see their works displayed at the Society’s Annual Summer Exhibition, held in August at the Scala Hall in Brixham, where members of the public can wander freely around the many paintings, drawings and prints on display. There is keen competition between our members for the cups and certificates variously awarded.
Monthly demonstrations given by professional artists take place in the evening at Brixham Rugby Club, on the third Tuesday of the month when more than 30 of our members regularly attend. The use of a camcorder and projector enables everyone to see an enlarged close-up of the evening’s demo, and a lively question and answer session usually ensues. More details on the current demonstration events can be found on our website http://www.brixhamartsociety.co.uk
Other activities include workshops, critiques, gallery trips and less formal events.
We very much welcome new members, who will soon find themselves among friends with similar interests. Fees, at April 2019 are £22.50 full member, and £16 associate. Non-members/visitors are welcome at £3.50

Our mission is to support and encourage artistic endeavour in the Brixham peninsula.
- Encouraging existing artistic groups
- Supporting new artistic ventures
- Promoting artistic aspirations
- Developing artistic opportunities for all generations
- Creating arts, theatre and community hubs in Brixham
BATS is operated on a purely voluntary basis, by the BATS Members, with professional technicians contracted as required. All surplus funds are used to enhance the professional programmes available and specific artistic projects, including fostering new writing and creation, in the Brixham area.
BATS operated Brixham Theatre from September 2013 to May 2018, when the ever-increasing overheads, including a 50% increase in rent, and diminishing hirings made the theatre unviable and the BATS Board handed back the lease under the break clause.
For the future, BATS will continue to support exciting new projects that advance the arts and culture in Brixham and the surrounding area. This will mean that, on occasions, BATS will still be staging professional arts events at a variety of venues around Torbay.

Mordred is a feature film and theatre production, being directed by Laura Jay, one of our founders.
A gritty, dark tale, Mordred is an Arthurian-era drama, heavily influenced by the earliest legends of Mordred, who is traditionally seen as King Arthur’s arch-nemesis, and illegitimate son. In the earlier legends, Mordred is much more of an ambiguous character, and not pure evil, as in modern re-tellings, this film and theatre show tells of the legends, from Mordred’s point of view.
This drama is set in the 530s, against the backdrop of the Saxon invasions, heavily influenced by Celtic legends and Druidic traditions, and the earliest tales of Arthur, and his followers. The film will be made across South West England, with as much use as possible of actual Arthurian locations, and ancient sites, in Devon and Cornwall. The theatre shows will be performed in South Devon (as a certainty) and we will also be looking to perform in Cornwall, as well.
Open auditions will be held Sunday Feb 28, 2016, 4.30pm , Chestnut Community Centre, 1 – 3 Poplar Close, Brixham, TQ5 0SA
Unfortunately we will not be able to accept video submissions. Attendance at auditions must be in person.
Please visit our auditions page for an overview of what to expect at our castings. http://www.southdevonplayers.com/auditions.html
The project runs as a profit share production, as per the terms set out on our website.
All named cast will be fully credited on IMDB
Anyone under the age of 16, must be accompanied at all castings, rehearsals and filming/ performances, by a parent or legal guardian.
Most of the ladies will be involved in fight/ battle scenes, fighting alongside the men, especially in the Saxon raids, and at Camlann, and mandatory combat training will take place in Brixham at the community centre for all relevant successful cast. If you have a physical reason that this would not be possible, please email us to discuss first. firstname.lastname@example.org
As this a theatre show as well as a film, rehearsals for the stage show will take place on Wednesday evenings and / or Sundays afternoons, at Chestnut Community Centre, 1 – 3 Poplar Close, Brixham, TQ5 0SA

Video trailer for the show
Following a ten-year history of researching, writing and performing historical and period dramas, the South Devon Players theatre & film company from Brixham, in Torbay, south Devon, the Players are now bringing to life one of the most famous sea disasters of all time, with a new stage production, Survivors of the Titanic. This drama follows the stories of various crew members and passengers on board the liner, and how some of the surviving crew, including those with links to Devon and Cornwall, were returned to Plymouth on board the SS Lapland, arriving at Millbay Docks, before travelling on by train to Southampton. This is but one of the fascinating links between Plymouth, and the Titanic, and we have been lucky enough to receive a great deal of historical research and support from local historian Nigel Voisey who is championing this aspect of Devons history.
The South Devon Players Theatre Company are members of both the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and of the Brixham Chamber of Commerce.

These auditions are for the following named male characters only.
(L indicates a large role appearing over more than one episode. )
Please be aware that you need to attend the audition in person. You may email in advance for audition pieces.
Inspector Javert L
Colonel Georges Pontmercy
Jehan Prouvaire L
Auditions per person will last around 10 – 15 minutes, where you will be expected to read a familiarised script piece. We will be looking for characterization, mannerisms, and the ability to take direction.
Marius, Combeferre, and Javert will also be required to take part in filming for the funding trailer, with short scenes, at the end of this (2014-15) winter.
Audition venue address:
Chestnut Community Centre, 1-3 Poplar Close, Brixham, TQ5 0SA
A note from Laura (producer)
Ric and I are still sorting precise castings for the people who came to Les Mis auditions at the Theatre Royals TR2 studios. However, we are definite that the above male roles still need to be filled as we didn’t find the ideal fit.
If you have already auditioned, then you do not need to attend this audition.
Overall, this is a three year project, with filming taking place for each crowdfunded episode, over a few days, after funding has been raised. During filming days, shoots could be an early start to late finish, and for relevant characters also include night-time shoots. A lot of locations will be in and around Devon and Cornwall in the UK, some locations in France, especially for later episodes, will be looked into as well.
This is a pretty different project, as it is based on Victor Hugo’s UNABRIDGED novel (this is not the musical or a single feature film!) and we are remaining as faithful to that unabridged novel as is possible.
Due to the nature of crowdfunding we are hoping to be able to pay our performers, but this depends entirely on funds raised, and may alter episode by episode as the series gets more well known, but at the minimum, once you have been cast as a character in the series, your expenses will be covered.
Depending on what character you wish to audition for, and are cast as you may be required for several episodes (or indeed all of them), or simply one.
HOW TO AUDITION:
Please contact us with a photograph, and a few words about the kind of role you are looking for. We will send you an audition pack and audition pieces suitable for your appearance. Please note that you do not need to learn the parts, just familiarise yourself with them.
At the auditions, you will be asked to perform the piece on video camera, as a screen test. We will be looking at your characterization, focus, and the realism of your portrayal of the character. We also will be looking at how you take direction, and interact with other people.
There are several child roles, but all children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
Please be aware that we cannot accept auditions or applications via email or video. In order to be considered for a role, you need to attend in person.
THERE IS NO FEE REQUIRED FOR YOU TO AUDITION OR BE INVOLVED IN ANY WAY, THIS IS A GENUINE PROJECT NOT A SCAM.

The Salty Sparrow Bistro CafeThe Salty Sparrow Bistro Cafe Contact: Samantha Bowden
about The Salty Sparrow
It was on a chance visit to Tuckenhay near Totnes back in 1992 where I was fortunate to meet one of my food heroes Keith Floyd at his then pub, ‘The Malsters Arms (Floyd’s Inn.)’ My passion for cooking really fueled the pot so to speak. After copious amounts of wine and sharing stories with the wonderful Mr Floyd, it confirmed what I knew what I wanted to do – open a small bistro.
Cooking and the joy of sharing simple but good food with friends and loved ones is a memory that goes back to being a small child. My parents were and are fantastic cooks and my culinary education started young. I am Australian born to a Danish father and Australian mother and with that alone I was born into a fusion of flavours. My father’s work as an artist took us around the world before we settled a couple of decades ago in the UK. My culinary education and quest never subsiding. A detour into a career in the financial sector took place before my vision could finally evolve. Patience was needed and the right time.
During this time and on the side of a career, I have been fortunate to cook for Loyd Grossman, Tom Parker Bowles and Phil Vickery all for ITV, as well as film a commercial showcasing one of my recipes for Marks and Spencer. I have also extensively travelled the globe gaining further experience in kitchens including Australia, Italy, France and Thailand where I also taught Thai cookery classes.
Cooking is an evolving education and I am learning new and wonderful flavour combinations every day. Too often food can be presented in a stuffy and pretentious manner. That’s not what the Salty Sparrow is about. Our emphasis is on the enjoyment of simple food done well; the star of the show is the ingredients themselves. Good produce speaks for itself which is why we go to great lengths to ensure what is lovingly prepared on your plate has also been lovingly grown or produced. It’s all heart from the field to plate. Our venue maybe small but that’s why we like it. This way all our focus and energy can be put into the dishes we create to be enjoyed in an intimate setting, where we want you to feel relaxed and at home.
We have seating for 16 in the bistro cafe with an additional 4 smaller tables in the enclosed secret courtyard (weather dependent).
It may have taken many years since that first visit to the region in 1992 and falling in love with this beautiful area, and in particular Brixham, but here we are. We made it! We have been welcomed with open arms from locals and visitors alike and all the team here at The Salty Sparrow look forward to welcoming you to our little bistro cafe near the harbour.
We are currently open during the evening from Tuesday to Saturday and on Sunday lunchtimes. We close on a Monday except for Bank holidays where we will close on a Tuesday instead. We welcome private bookings for your celebration events with exclusive use of the venue incorporating your taste and budget.
We absolutely adore children and dogs but we are restricted due to health and safety. For this reason regrettably, we are unable to accommodate high chairs. `Small well behaved dogs kept on leads are welcome in the courtyard garden and the bistro (space permitting).
Make a reservation by phone or drop on by – we look forward to looking after you soon.
– notes from Samantha, chef & proprietor of The Salty Sparrow.

This iconic Victorian house, built in the 1850′s has been totally but compassionately re-furbished offering guests modern amenities including car parking and WiFi but still retaining its charm and heritage. All of the four bedrooms have sea views and en suite facilities.
The sumptuous and varied breakfast is served in “the dairy” with its own views of the marina, breakwater and Torbay. Fresh fruit dishes and locally sourced fish provide alternatives from the more traditional options.
