One of the Chamber’s new projects for 2015 is the creation of a regular fish market open to the public to help increase footfall in Brixham.
The 14th April is the tentative start date, which coincides with the opening date for the new Rockfish Restaurant. The market is planned to take place every Tuesday morning on the harbour side under the canopy of the Old Fish Market until the end of September, weather and availability of fish permitting.
As Gordon Gout, who is leading the project explains. “Brixham Fish is synonymous throughout the UK and worldwide with quality and variety. A public market of this nature in this location was extremely popular in the early part of the 20th century but fell out of fashion with the arrival of supermarkets. The last market of this kind took place in the 1960’s. We want to once more make this wonderful, natural food more accessible for locals and visitors alike.”
The project has received hygiene clearance from the local authorities and is going through the final stages of approval. If anyone has any suggestions, please contact info@brixhamchamber.co.uk.
