Nov 8, 2023
Our next Open Meeting is at the Berry Head Hotel on Tuesday 21st November at 7pm. It is themed around the Environment and Sustainability and we have a number of exceptional and inspiring speakers lined up for the evening.
- How do seals mate?
- How many discarded bags of dog poo can you pick up in a year?
- Why is Berry Head so important for Greater Horseshoe bats, migrating birds, and rare flowers?
- How can my business reduce its carbon footprint?
For the answer to these questions and more, come and join us!
Local naturalist Duncan Kenny has just returned from an eight-week project researching seal pup mortality on a remote island in the Irish sea. Duncan says “I will be illustrating the beautiful wild lives I observed and some of the successes and the challenges both the seals and I faced”. His research informs us about our local marine habitats, and the seals in Brixham, which he knows well from his wild swimming and involvement with the Seal Project.
Hannah Beaumont is a local hero! You may know her from her Facebook pseudonym Me and the Plastic Sea, where for some years she has been cataloguing the piles of litter (and bags of poo) she has collected from our local coastline. On November 17th Hannah is setting off on her latest litter picking marathon, 26.4 miles of coastline from Brixham to Kingswear, Galmpton, over to Goodrington, and back home. She’ll be talking about her relentless litter picking and how we can all help to look after our coast.
Mike Langman is one of the country’s most knowledgeable bird enthusiasts and illustrators. Since 2015 he has been coordinating a determined group of volunteers to protect and enhance the wonderful natural environment at Clennon Lakes, one of Torbay’s most important (and previously neglected) wildlife sites. This is a great local example of how, with determination, we can protect and enhance our beautiful spaces and give nature a fighting chance.
How exactly should we go about reducing our carbon footprint? There is currently an initiative for businesses to get free consultancy advice on this topic, from the South West Manufacturing Advisory Service. Phil Halse will be joining us to talk through some examples from recent business sessions he has run in this area, and how we can take advantage of this help for our own businesses (hint: they have a free event in Brixham on 7th December).
Our Chamber meetings are open to all – non-members are welcome. Please let us know you’ll be coming, at hospitality@brixhamcham

We hope you will join us for our autumn open meeting: 7-9pm, Tuesday 19th September, at the Berry Head Hotel.
This month’s speakers include:
1. Windy Corner Roadworks
We all remember the long closure of Brixham Road at the start of this year for construction at the entrance to the Inglewood housing site. But there are further works scheduled at Long Road and Windy Corner, starting late September.
Iain Neary, from Deeley Freed, the developers behind the Inglewood housing development, has offered to come to talk to local businesses and residents about their plans and the potential impact it could have.
2. Centenary Awards Update
In our 100th year, the chamber is making £15,000 of grant funding available for local organisations to develop our town. Phase 2 is coming to the close, there is a 3rd phase, and we look forward to updating you on the progress so far, and hopefully inspiring some new applications!
There will also be details of the Centenary Gala Dinner which will be held on November 17th.
3. More details to follow!
Our Chamber meetings are open to all – non-members are welcome. Please let us know you’ll be coming, at hospitality@brixhamchamber.co.uk
Apr 6, 2023
Come and join the Chamber’s next open meeting on Tuesday April 18th at 7pm at the Berry Head Hotel. Our open meetings are a chance to hear the latest news from the Chamber, network with local business owners, and each month we have a series of guest speakers on topical themes.
The schedule for April 18th includes:
1. The Brixham Chamber Centenary Awards: The Official Launch!
2023 is the 100th year a Chamber of Commerce has operated in Brixham. To commemorate this centenary we are organising a special project this year: The Centenary Awards. Aaron Dowling will be unveiling the details this evening.
2. Shoalstone Pool: Problems and Plans
Shoalstone faces a significant challenge due to damage to its foundations that have worsened in recent years. Dave Barter of the Shoalstone Pool CIO will talk to us about the Save The Waves campaign
3. Festivals & Events
In the coming spring and early summer months there are many festivals, new and old, taking place in Brixham and Torbay. Speakers will update members on what to expect.
4. BATS: The Steps of Brixham
Brixham Art & Theatre Society are creating a special resource for Brixham. Called Brixham Walks, it will be an interactive online map that will feature many different aspects of our lovely town; the first aspect of this is an online walk up and down our many steps, with historical guides along the way. Cecelia Kean will be introducing this map.
5. Brixham Development Academy / Brixham Town FC
Over the last few years Shaun Langdon has built a new business on North Boundary Road, primarily teaching & supporting our young people via opportunities to play football. Brixham town FC play on the same site… except right now they don’t, because of rules about on-site changing facilities. Shaun will talk about his Development Academy and the help he needs from local businesses and residents.
Our open meetings are open to everyone, including non-members. There is no need to book, but if you plan to attend it is helpful to RSVP to hospitality@brixhamchamber.co.uk.

Nov 7, 2022
We hope you will join us for our next General Meeting on Thursday 24th November at 7pm at the Berry Head Hotel.
On the agenda this month:
- Brixham Banking Hub
Our new Banking Hub should be opening imminently! Town Clerk Tracey Hallett will be updating us on how the hub will work. - Brixham Road – potential closure for much of 2023
Since becoming aware of these plans in October, we have put a lot of time into understanding and questionning the rationale for these plans. We’ve been in touch with our MP, the council, and the developers. At present we have no confidence in the plans for managing traffic in and out of the town.
We have invited representatives of the council and the developers to join us for a Q&A session. - Updates from the Chamber
As usual we will bring the latest news from the Chamber, including local events and our “shop local” Christmas marketing campaign.
You don’t need to be a member to attend the meeting – everyone is welcome.
If you would like to come, it would be helpful if you can let us know in advance at hospitality@brixhamchamber.co.uk or via facebook – https://fb.me/e/2VYwdZLi9
