Nigel Makin, Chamber executive lead for retail and the town centre said: “As many towns across the UK continue in their struggle to survive, regenerate and prosper, we should acknowledge and celebrate the fact that so many businesses appear to see a positive future in Brixham and are prepared to invest or re-invest in our town.”
Nigel continued: “We can’t mention town centre improvements without once more thanking Pride in Brixham for the high standard of work that they continue to carry out around the harbour and further afield. This year they have vastly improved the look and feel of the town square and Fore Street by planting and maintaining flower beds, painting parking posts and lamp posts, upgrading the bus shelter and bins and even laying new stone slabs.”
One further issue that the Chamber is pursuing is that of upgrading the public bins in the town. Nigel explained: “There is an ongoing problem of litter around the town and in the harbour area in particular at busy times of year. Our current bins cannot cope but there is a solution which has been successfully implemented in many towns and cities across the UK and worldwide. Big Belly Bins have a built in solar-powered compactor which gives them at least 5 times the capacity of our existing bins. They also have seagull-proof entry hoppers and even call the operator when they are ready to be emptied. We are urging Brixham Council, Torbay Council and Tor2 to take this initiative forward.”
